Sister Gabriella was born in Cesarò, in the province of Messina (Sicily), on 3 May 1939, the daughter of Salvatore Carcione and Maria Grazia Trecarichi.

She was the youngest in her family of three brothers and one surviving sister.

When still young she went to France to begin her Marist formation in St Foy. On 30 October 1960 she was received as a novice, and on 26 April 1962 she made her first religious profession.

Subsequently, when she returned to Italy, she studied in preparation to become a kindergarten teacher and she also attended a school to perfect one of her gifts which was singing.

For many years she devoted herself to teaching in kindergartens in the parishes where she served.

She never neglected to organize groups of young and old for liturgical music, always much appreciated by the parish communities, as well as always taking care of catechesis for children.

In the last eleven years spent in the parish community of Collegno (TO), she also took care of visiting the families where there were sick or elderly people, to listen to them and to bring them the Eucharist.

She regularly attended meetings at Caritas to meet people in need and of different nationalities.

On the evening of 8 July 2021, Sr Gabriella was in the church together with Sr Maria Grazia for a farewell from the parish community since, after the summer period, they would move to the Treviso community.

In her words of greeting Sr Gabriella addressed the people present inviting them to let themselves “be embraced by the Crucifix and the Most Holy Mary in order to always be living stones for the Church and for the world".

At the end of the evening she became ill and for this reason was rushed to the nearest hospital.

Despite the care given, on Saturday 10 July 2021, Sr Gabriella passed away.

Her sudden departure for her return to the Father's House has left everyone shaken and disoriented.

On 14 July 2021 at 9.00am in the Parish Church of Gesu Maestro in Collegno (TO) Sr Gabriella’s funeral was celebrated, with the participation of some family members, and of her Marist Sisters. The Requiem Mass was concelebrated by several priests from nearby parishes and with the participation of a large number of parishioners.

Immediately after the ceremony, her body was taken to Treviso to be buried on the same day at 4.00pm in the cemetery of Ponzano Veneto (TV), where other Marist Sisters rest.

As Sr Gabriella’s coffin arrived at the graveside, awaiting her were many people from the Treviso parishes where she had collaborated.

We thank Sr Gabriella for her life lived in simplicity and abandonment to the will of God - the memory of her will always be present in the hearts of the people who knew her.
