Legacy Wall to celebrate 100 years
Marist School Mt Albert is preparing to celebrate its centennial in 2027.
They have created a Legacy Wall to honour and celebrate those who have contributed over the years. These four panels are now finished. Each panel represents one of the school’s patrons. The four houses are CHAVOIN, POMPALLIER, BERNARD AND AUSTIN.
- CHAVOIN – Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, founder of the Marist Sisters
- POMPALLIER – Jean-Baptiste François Pompallier, the first Roman Catholic Bishop in New Zealand
- BERNARD – Mother Bernard (Marist Sister and founder of Marist School Mt Albert)
- AUSTIN – after Sister Austin (Marist Sister and founder of Marist School Mt Albert)
A motto from the lives of the patrons is incorporated into the artwork and the colours reflect something of their background, especially Mother Bernard and Sister Austin. In Mother Bernard’s panel the original school building, which still exists and is used, is in the background. You will notice that Sister Austin is wearing the “new habit”. That’s to mark the fact that she was both a pioneer in 1927 and returned to teach here in 1967! A remarkable woman
The outgoing Year 6 pupils had learnt about each patron and talked to the artist. As they talked, he drew.
