26/01/2023 - Ireland
Sr Antoinette from the Unit of West Africa writes of her time in Ireland.
Carrick-on- Shannon and Tubbercurry were the lands of my dreams. The Irish sisters who lived with me in The Gambia and Senegal spoke a lot about Carrick-on-Shannon and Tubbercurry.
From the sound of their names I fell in love with these places. I had only one big wish in my Marist life: to visit Carrick-on-Shannon and Tubbercurry someday.
And Carrick here I came. Tubbercurry here I am. I was not disappointed.
I came, I saw and I believed.
I came to the very beginning of Marist life here in Ireland. In fact, I am privileged to be here for the 150th anniversary of the presence of Marist Sisters in Carrick.
I saw history kept alive and lived differently.
I saw beautiful, kind, generous, considerate and open Marist women who were delighted to have me around.
I saw the courageous women who helped to build my faith as a child, a teenager and a young adult.
I saw women who influenced my Marist dreams.
I saw strong connections with home.
I saw that my presence gave hope to all sisters.
Therefore, I believe that as it was in the beginning is still very much so today.
I believe that it’s now my turn to continue raising the Marist flag
with dignity, simplicity and integrity for I felt I belonged.
This experience was made richer by the presence of Sr Sumreen a Religious from Pakistan who came with me during this time. She is now an “adopted” Marist.
