 40 Years of Marist Sisters' Presence in Brazil

It was good to celebrate this special day of thanksgiving with Grace, Bernadette and Mary Duffy, three Sisters who were among the first pioneers and with the whole Under 60 group.

We were united in our morning prayer with Sr Imelda who is in Ireland and also Sr Violette who is with God.  We also remembered those who were in the second group of Sisters who arrived in Brazil, especially Xavier who too has gone to God.

Bernadette shared a reflection about her initial experience as she arrived in an unknown mission and began to form community with Sisters from other parts of the world. She had left behind the cold and snow of Europe and it was 40 degrees C when she arrived in Brazil.  Grace shared the desire of Margaret Purcell (Superior General) and her council at the time that they initiate a new style of Marist life.

Mass was celebrated in Portuguese with joyful hymns which reminded us of the kindness of God in our lives.  The presence of Our Lady of Aparecida was significant throughout the day.
