Anne McCabe was there when UNANIMA named Meera Karunananthan as their 2016 Woman of Courage! Meera has shown sheer determination and passion for our “common home” and the right of every person to clean, uncontaminated water!
Meera (in red) is pictured here with the award in her hand. The flame captures the passion, energy and commitment that Meera demonstrates in trying to protect our environment and especially the natural resource of water. The flame is mounted on a piece of oak- a tree known for its strength and endurance. The oak tree is one that is deeply rooted and stands firm against winds and storms. It also symbolizes a perennial birthing of new life and hope. The copper plate on which Meera’s name is engraved is a symbol of the deeply spiritual values which underlie her passion. Copper symbolizes characteristics like charisma, artistic creativity, caring and balance. It is also considered a healing metal that teaches about living in a way that enhances rather than destroys God’s gift of the earth.
