18/04/2016 - Philippines
18 years ago, two missionaries set out from Fiji to establish the first Marist Sisters' foundation in the Philippines.
Torika Wong and Veronica Lum were sent forth by Gail Reneker, the Congregational Leader at the time:
to those people for whom Mary has a particular concern; those who need the assurance, encouragement and support of God’s mercy and compassion, those whose life situations hinder the happiness and full human development in Jesus that God wants for them, those who are struggling to make true communities of faith happen, those who experience oppression and discrimination, those on the boundaries and beyond of church and society.
Their fidelity to that original vision drew some local women to join them as well as other missionaries from our Congregation.
Now the time has come for the two pioneers to depart. Recently the small but vibrant group of Marist Sisters currently in the Philippines gathered for the first of a number of planned farewells... The photos show 1) Sheila, the first Filipina leader of the Marist Sisters with Torika and 2) then Sheila with Vero and 3) the pioneers wrapped in their gifts
