WYD Welcome Ceremony at Field of Encounter

The group of World Youth Day pilgrims from the Marist Sisters, including Sisters Silvia, Regina and Mariana, began the day with prayer in the chapel before setting out this morning to the "Field of Encounter."

At the "Field of Encounter" (Edward VII Park) they joined over 500,000 pilgrims who had been gathering since early morning.

Arriving at the Edward VII Park, Pope Francis drove around the crowd of pilgrims.

As Pope Francis approached each group of pilgrims, they rose from where they had been sitting for hours and ran towards the fence, waving flags and cheering Pope Francis on.

Pope Francis reminded the pilgrims that

"There is room for everyone in the Church, and whenever there isn't, we must make room, even for those who make mistakes, who fall or who struggle".
