BRINGING LIFE TO URBAN SPACE

As a prelude to St Patrick’s Day the Irish Embassy to Italy linked up with Retake Roma on Saturday 12th March to help make at least one area in Rome ( Piazza A. Meucci) a little more green.  Anne linked up with two other sisters, Anita and Grace, to give a helping hand.

In over ten years of activity, Retake Roma has organized countless events for the care of public spaces in cities, along the coasts and in green areas, aimed at improving environmental and social conditions.

Through the regeneration of urban spaces they set themselves three objectives:

  • revitalise run down spaces , making them usable for the inhabitants of the area as meeting and play places;
  • demonstrate that with a participatory action and planning and an efficient use of resources it is possible to achieve noticeable changes;
  • induce a permanent change in the people who live in the city, helping them to see their spaces with new eyes …  to imagine them  how they would like them to be, and to put their ideas into action.

It was great to see litter and graffiti disappearing and to hear that there is a Retake Roma Group which is very active in the Via Aurelia area.
