Parish Church Closes in Eastpointe
On Sunday August 22 after being the spiritual home for many for 65 years, St Barnabas Church, Eastpointe, Michigan closed its doors for the last time. For 63 years the Marist Sisters have been part of the parish and for 26 years they staffed the parish school.
The Bishop celebrated the closing Mass to an overflowing congregation. Past parishioners and past students returned in force to offer thanksgiving and to share the sadness. At the close of the liturgy, as the Tabernacle door was left open, and the altar stripped bare of cloths, the sobs were audible and tears flowed silently. But the most poignant moment came when the congregation was asked to process out of church for the last time.
The church door was then locked and the bishop tied a cord to signify finality. It was a sad moment. The Marist Sisters are deeply loved and appreciated at St Barnabas and they loved being part of this community. The deep bonds that united us in Christ remain far beyond a building and will last not just for years but into eternity. Thank you St Barnabas for the legacy.
