BEING PRESENT AND LISTENING TO THEIR STORIES

In the week before Christmas Tropical Cyclone Yasa caused havoc in the Pacific before hitting the islands of Fiji. Strong winds (250kph/160mph) were accompanied by torrential rain caused destruction over a wide area. Communications were cut.  Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged. Many affected people also had their access to food and water cut off.

Archbishop Peter Loy Chong quickly organized a team from the Archdiocese of Suva to act as the Church first responders and reach out to those affected by Tropical Cylcone Yasa.

Two Marists Sisters, Kalala Kiutau Taufa and Mariana Tevurega were part of this team. They were responsible for distributing food rations in two villages of Nabala Parish.

Kalala writes:

“It was a blessing to be part of this team.  It was a great work of mercy and to show to the people who lost their property and livelihood that they were not alone.

Most of what we did was to be present and listen to the stories of those who were affected.”
