 BREAD AND BUTTER THING

Sr Anne McCabe shares news of her outreach to those in need through volunteering for the “Bread and Butter Thing.” The hub Sr Anne has been volunteering at is situated at St Joseph’s Primary School, Longsight. This hub serves both the Longsight and Beswick areas of Manchester. Around 400 families avail of this service.

“In Greater Manchester ‘The Bread And Butter Thing’ has provided over 4,300,000 meals to families in need and currently delivers roughly 20 tonnes of surplus food a week – that's about 45,000 meals a week! There are over 8,000 registered families across Greater Manchester, working through 27 hubs. Members range from young families and single parent families to refugees and the elderly.

The food comes from supermarkets, factories and farms who donate it to the project rather than wasting it or sending it to landfill. The food is then used to make up food bags for the members. Communities really struggling to afford the everyday basics are targeted and become hub points. Partnerships are formed with local community organisations that are in a position to recommend the services of TBBT and recruit members.

The charity then operates through a membership model, whereby families with very little disposable income are offered the provision of a deeply discounted food service to help their income go further.”
