Mary Marren - Ireland
03/08/1928 - 06/12/2021

Sr Mary Marren went to her eternal home on 6 December 2021 in Sligo University Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on 3 August 1928 in Corracunane, Curry, Co Sligo to Bartholomew Marren and Kate(Durcan). Born into a devout family, Mary was nurtured in her faith with love and devotion and a  very deep sense of  strong family values. This foundation remained with Mary and was the ideal preparation for later life in our Marist Community.

After much soul searching, Mary entered the Novitiate in Carrick on Shannon in 1948 and made first profession in 1950. After her profession Mary joined the Community in Fulham and while there she made her final profession in 1955.

Mary led a very fruitful life, initially as teacher and later as Headteacher of the Junior School until 1970. She then moved to Paignton in the South of England as Superior and three years later to Barnstaple where she was tasked with negotiations for the withdrawal of our sisters from North Devon. This was done with great efficiency.

Mary’s ministry led her Ottery St Mary, Camberley, and back to Fulham for a further ten years until she retired back to Ireland in 1996.

A very generous presence, Mary gave herself to her ministry with devotion and thoughtfulness, listening to the needs of the sisters and encouraging the members, young and old. Her compassion and care of all children and parents was admirable.

On her return to Ireland Mary was based in Cambridge Terrace, Dublin where she expressed the desire to develop her skills in “Sign Language”. This Course arose from a desire to enable her to communicate freely with her brother John who was profoundly deaf. Having completed studies in  the Centre for Hard of Hearing  she continued studies in University College Dublin.  When Mary graduated with her Diploma, she was highly commended by the then President of Ireland Mary McAleese. This was a great honour for Mary. It gave her the courage to continue helping students and friends for many years into her retirement.

In 2019 Mary transferred to Carrick on Shannon to enjoy the benefits of full time care in her later years. This proved to be a very worthwhile time for Mary. She was near her family, particularly her youngest sister Attracta who spent many valuable moments with her.  She enjoyed the solitude of the Convent Chapel spending time with the Lord. Mary loved her Rosary up to the last day would ensure that she said it faithfully with the Community

We thank you Mary for your presence throughout our Congregation and for the many people whose lives you touched. You have left a lasting legacy of courage and goodwill with us.
